Journal #11: Transitioning to Early Adulthood
As we transition out of adolescence and enter early adulthood, I want you to get a real picture of what this looks like. We have talked about the textbook sequence of the stages, but what does it actually look like or feel like? Many of you are approaching that phase in your life where you will move onto whatever is out there for you post-high school. Are you ready? Do you know what you are getting yourself into?
For this journal assignment, you will interview (or have a conversation with) someone who graduated last year and is currently pursuing a path similar to the one you plan on pursuing. So whether you are planning on going to college and living on campus, being a commuter student living at home or going straight into the work force, I want you to find someone and ask them about their journey and how things are. Get to know how their transition out of adolescence and into early Adulthood is going. It can be in a formal interview format or just a conversation. You may want to ask questions about whether they ever regretted their choices about where they are. You can also ask about how they made the choices they did. These questions should help you gain an understanding of what early adulthood looks like and what you could potentially run into in the next couple of years. Upon completing your interview, write a summary of your interview/conversation and shine light on what you learned about early adulthood through the eyes of someone who is currently going through it. Also add your thoughts, questions and feelings about your personal journey into early adulthood that is just around the corner - are you nervous? Excited? Scared? Make it about you.
Task 1: Think about what you want of your future after high school. Are you wanting to go to college? Will you dorm or commute? Will you attend a technical school? Maybe enlist to serve your country? Do you want to take a year off and travel the world? Write a paragraph about what your thoughts are right now about what you want to do after high school.
Task 2: Think about a person who is currently pursuing what you responded to wanting to do in Task 1. Think about 10-12 interview questions to ask him/her. The nature of these questions is to learn about their transition so that you can know what to expect and therefore better prepare for your period of transition. Type up all questions on a google docs and make sure you allow me to access this file.
Task 3: Conduct the interview (face to face, email, FaceTime, or by phone) and write down their responses on the same google docs created in Task 2. In your journal posting, begin with your thoughts about your future, what you want to pursue, how you came to that decision, etc. Then introduce the person you interviewed. Attach a link to your google doc in your journal posting so that people can read through your questioning and the response of your interviewee. Then end your journal posting with a reflection paragraph about what you learned and how you are feeling as you continue working towards your future adventures.
